This handcrafted ash-glazed bowl by ceramic artist Beatričė Kelerienė celebrates the quiet beauty of natural materials and traditional firing techniques. Made from stoneware and shaped on the wheel, the bowl acquires its distinctive surface from melted wood ash settling gently during firing, creating a soft, earthy palette of pale grey tones accented with expressive dark speckles. The material basis of the bowl contains of the clay with granite sand and natural ash glazes made from the ash of various kinds of wood and straw. The tradition of such ash glazes can be traced back to the Shang period in China (c. 1500 B.C.), and it is thought they were produced accidentally, the result of white-hot wood ash being carried through the kiln with the draft of the fire and settling onto the pots, where the searing white heat melted it to a glass. The glaze’s organic spotting is a natural outcome of the firing atmosphere, making each piece truly unique. Subtle variations in texture — from smooth, lightly glazed areas to slightly matte, clay-revealing surfaces — lend depth and character to the bowl’s minimalist form. Comfortably sized and beautifully balanced, this piece is ideal for tea, small servings, or as a contemplative object in a curated interior.
